I Am From

I am from washing machines,
from the morning country station and a pot of tea.
I am from the blue cape cod (siding) farm house
with front porch & swing.
I am from the Apples in August...
The weeping birch
whose long gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.

I'm from Thanksgiving get-togethers and tasty home cooking,
 from Gerald and Grandma Muriel.
I'm from gardeners and neat freaks
and from inviting one into our home.

I'm from Say Please and Thank you and church on Sunday
and in Dutch, What's put on your plate - you eat!
I'm from Mom's Christmas Dinner.
I'm from New Canaan, N.B. and Maritime Farmers,
Sunday soup and homemade yogurt...
from Grandpa Ralph's hunting
moose, deer and salmon from the river,
Heit's egg collection, grandparents gone on...
 on the bedroom shelf...
Great- Uncle Gesner's paintings on living room walls.

  1. Beautiful! It brought back memories of my grandparents and their farm, where I spent some of the happiest days of my childhood. Today I'll look around at the plants beginning to sprout and bloom with my grandmother's eye - a gardener's eye - and smile.
